Hola! I offer in-home Spanish classes for ages 2-10, grown-ups are welcome to stay, but not required. If your child is 2 years old, it is highly recommended that you stay. Classes may be held indoors or outdoors. Keep reading for the current schedule of classes.
Open-Ended Play
How did we acquire our first language? Through social interactions, routines, structured learning, unstructured learning, and play! My warm environment invites everyone to enter open-ended play so that the language is acquired naturally and not forced. Through play, children will interact with the materials, hear the vocabulary related to those materials, then use the new words they have acquired when they are ready.
Themes
Every week we cover a new topic and this may include the current season, instruments, food, games, community, music, stories, etc. As the weeks progress, children will recognize and apply what they have learned in the previous weeks to the current week and your child will begin to respond as they become more familiar with the language. For example, in the Winter, we'll see the colors azul, blanco, gris (blue, white, gray) in our natural environment, but they might also see these colors as they play with cars or when they make a winter related art project. They'll be able to apply this knowledge when identifying the colors of the oso polar (polar bear) or nieve (snow).
Children get time to play, but then part of our routine is to provide some structure at carpet time where we practice counting, colors, then practice the new vocabulary for the week, read a book related to our learning, and sing a song that is also related to the learning for the day. I also incorporate the sounds of Latin America by selecting a song to dance to which ties into the learning for the day as well!
Honoring Traditions
Our biggest celebration yet is Día de Muertos. We spend most of October learning about this special celebration that originated in Oaxaca, Mexico. We learn about this tradition through art, baking, stories, songs, and dance. All my classes work together to put together an ofrenda which includes hand-made items. We talk about death and ways to honor and remember our dearly departed on this special day.
Support the learning
If you are staying in class for Spanish, you are interacting in Spanish as much as you can. There are many opportunities to practice Spanish in class, whether you use the visual aides or when you interact with your own child, or when you socialize in Spanish with other parents who might also be practicing their own Spanish skills. I send families a review of the day's learning so that you are able to practice until our next class.
